About Me: Principal Kathy

Hello Paul Bunyan Elementary I want to tell you a little bit about myself, so you’ll know who I am while I am your child’s principal during their kindergarten or K1 school year.

My name is Kathy Van Wert, but I ask our students to call me Principal Kathy.  It is easier and more friendly.  I grew up in Bemidji graduating from Bemidji High School in 1974.  I graduated from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor’s Degree with a K-6 Elementary Education license, I have an emphasis in reading and early childhood education.  I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Administration from St. Cloud State University and a K-12 Administration license from the University of Minnesota.

I have taught kindergarten and second grade, along with Early Childhood Education courses.  I have been an assistant principal at Red Lake Elementary, Duluth Central High School, and Bemidji Middle School.  I have been a principal at Lincoln Elementary and now at Paul Bunyan Elementary.  I have been in the field of education since 1982!  Yea.. I’m pretty old!!  But also, have a lot of experience.

I have two grown daughters, one grandson and a granddaughter.  They live in the cities and Wisconsin.  I try to visit them once a month to stay active in their lives.  I think extended family is very important.

My promise  to you is to  do my very best to work with our terrific teachers to give your child the best kindergarten experience I can.  I want our students to like school; to like coming to school and like being here.  I want each of them to finish high school and go on to some type of post secondary school; to have happy, healthy productive lives.

Please feel free to call me with your concerns and questions.  You can reach me at 333-3119 or 444-2270.
