Last week the second grade classrooms at Horace May were visited by three seven-month-old Red Kangaroos.  Owner Caara Holmstrom from Bemidji’s Animal Land who raises these kangaroos shared information on the life and habits of these interesting marsupials. Joey, Moose, and Bindy entertained the second graders by hopping around the classrooms, boxing, and somersaulting into the quilted pouches Caara uses to transport them from place to place.  These fabric pouches are similar to the pouch of a mother kangaroo so Joey, Moose, and Bindy would prefer to stay in them all day, but Caara makes them come out daily to exercise.

Red Kangaroos come from Australia and are the largest kangaroos in the world. Joey, Moose, and Bindy may look small now, but they will grow to stand 6 feet tall and weigh 100 pounds.  Be sure to stop by Animal Land this summer to see the five Red Kangaroos that live there currently.
