MR. MAY

Horace May was born in 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He played baseball for North High, and went on to play baseball for the Minnesota Gophers. During WW II, he distinguished himself aboard the “USS THE SULLIVAN’S” as Chief Pharmacist’s Mate. After the war, he moved to Bemidji to teach physical education and coach the Lumberjacks Baseball Team. His dedication to teaching and coaching endeared him to everyone he met. The exemplary life he led, has been a model for many generations in Bemidji. In 1972, Bemidji honored his memory, by naming its new elementary school “Horace May Elementary”.
