Term 2/Semester 1 Grading Information

Dear Lumberjack Families,

As we are nearing the final weeks of Term 2 and Semester 1, we wanted to share our plans for grading through this distance learning period.

We will follow the traditional letter grading plan for students but with two adjustments: NP (No Pass) rather than failing grades and a Pass option rather than a letter grade.  We will not offer Failing (F) grades at this time but rather have a NP (No Pass) grade to be put in its place.  Students who receive an NP will not earn the credit for the course and will need to retake the class or recover the credit if it is required.  A NP grade will not factor in and affect a GPA positively or negatively.  Students will also have the option to choose a pass (P) grade rather than a letter grade.  A (P) on a student’s transcript will not affect overall GPA. Students will have the option to choose a pass grade for Term 2 and Semester 1 of the 2020-2021 school year.  The Pass grade is not an option for Term 1 final grades. Also, the Pass option is not an option for Term 3, Term 4, and Semester 2 of the 2020-2021 school year. Please note, this policy is not applicable to College in the High School (CIHS) courses.  CIHS courses will NOT have the Pass option as it is concurrent enrollment with Bemidji State University.

Students will communicate with each of their teachers which option they prefer: traditional letter grades or a passing grade.  Students’ decisions on grading may differ from one class to the next.  Decisions must be shared and communicated with each teacher by the final school day of Term 2/Semester 1.  When making this decision, it is important to know that an A grade is perceived more positively by higher education than a Pass grade on a student’s high school transcript.  It can also be argued that a B grade on a high school transcript holds higher regard than a Pass in the eyes of college and university admissions.

*All students will receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or No Pass (NP)) for their Term 2/Semester 1 courses.

*If a student does NOT want the letter grade they are currently earning (A, B, C, or D), they need to choose a Pass (P) grade. All students earning an F will be given a No Pass (NP) grade.

**Students will need to choose a P with their teacher for EACH class.

**Students are expected to notify their teacher individually for the course in which they are choosing the Pass grade by Thursday, January 28th, 2021.  Students will not have the opportunity to change this grading decision after Thursday, January 28th, 2021.

*The Pass grading option is only extended to Term 2 and Semester 1 final grades of the 2020-2021 school year.  Term 3, Term 4, and Semester 2 will NOT have the Pass grading option.  In addition, Pass grading is not an option for Term 1 of this school year.

*The Pass grading option is NOT extended to College in the High School courses.

*The default grade will be a letter grade if students do not communicate with their teacher by January 28th, 2021, of their decision to take a Pass grade.
